Polyisobutylene - polymer with many fields of application

Polyisobutylene (PIB)

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is the polymer of isobutene, the main component of butyl rubber. One of the most important properties is its solubility in water. This property makes the product group to a universally usable polymer, for a variety of different industrial applications.

It is a thermoplastic material and depending on the degree of polymerization, the spectrum of the substance ranges from viscous oil to plastically sticky mass to raw rubber-like substance. Due to those characteristics, polyisobutylene has a very high tendency to creep – this might be weakened by adding other ingredients like e.g., talc or soot.

Polyisobutylene is made by polymerization of about 98% of isobutylene with about 2% of isoprene. From a structural perspective, it is similar to polypropylene with two methyl groups substituted on every other carbon atom.

Industries

TER Chemicals offers polyisobutylene for adhesives and sealants. It is also used in wax blends, for the modification of lubricating oils / lubricants, for laminating and coating, in roofing membranes, and in blends with polyolefins and rubbers.

By far the most important use is the production of lubricant and fuel additives. Here, the industry benefits from the resistance of polyisobutylene to thermal and oxidative stress and from the fact that the polymer mixes with hydrophobic (water-repellent) substances.

Polyisobutylene is toxicologically harmless. This is why it is used in the food industry e.g. for the production of chewing gum and other products that require similar properties)
